Special Bulletin - Cross-Border radio station 89X returns to Windsor/Detroit
Almost 5 years after CIMX-FM Windsor, ON/Detroit, MI dropped the long-running 89X in favour of Pure Country, the station has brought back the iconic brand and format.
It comes after the station ran jockless with promos between songs mostly in Spanish, and between after playing multiple Johnny Cash songs.
But as of this morning at 8:08am Eastern Time, the long-running brand familiar to Detroit and Windsor radio listeners comes back after a near 5-year wait.
The first song to be played on the revived "89X" brand was Stop by Jane’s Addiction, which was also the first song to be played when "89X" debuted in May 1991, and it was also the last song before the station flipped to country on November 19, 2020.
During the time when the station aired a country format, it competed with CJWF-FM, as well as WYCD out of Detroit, and WWWW-FM out of Ann Arbor.
But when CIMX-FM switched back to an alternative rock format, it will now compete with Audacy's WDZH, which is also based out of Detroit.
Alternative rock fans in Windsor & Detroit finally rejoice because the long-standing brand has been revived just in time for the long weekend on both sides of the border.
