Remembering 900 CHML Hamilton

Corus Entertainment's CHML-AM, serving Hamilton, Ontario for almost 96 years, abruptly closed down for good as of 1pm Eastern Time this afternoon.

Launched on September 28, 1927, CHML-AM first operated at 880 kHz, then moved to 1010 kHz in 1936, and finally moved to 900 kHz in 1941, in which the station stayed there for 84 years.

For most of the station's history, it broadcasted Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL games until the 2014 season, when they gave up the local radio rights to CKOC, only to be returned in 2021, when CKOC flipped to business news.

The station also aired Hamilton Bulldogs hockey and McMaster Marauders football games, only to be given up the rights to both teams in 2016 in favor of the Buffalo Bills Radio Network, from originating flagship station WGR-AM 550.

In the early to mid 90s, during the time music fans switched to the FM dial, CHML joined the trend of many AM radio stations across Canada to flip their format to 100% news/talk.

When Ken Soble passed away in 1966, CHML was sold to Western Broadcasting, later known as Western International Communications (WIC), only to be spun off as Corus Entertainment in late 1999, when the company took over Western's radio assets.

In mid-2016 CHML began broadcasting on HD Radio, via CING-FM's HD3 subchannel.

Our hearts go out to the employees who worked at this station over the years and it will be forever missed.
