The Week That Was In Worldwide Media - September 28, 2025

On this week's edition on "The Week That Was In Worldwide Media", we breakdown the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live, the shutdown of KION-TV's news department, and Bert Weiss' radio show coming to an end in October!

Here's the breakdown of the top 3 stories of what happened this week in worldwide media:

Story #1: Jimmy Kimmel Live returns to the airwaves

On September 23rd, Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show returned to most ABC affiliates, except the stations owned and/or operated by Nexstar & Sinclair.

The return episode was seen by 6.26 million viewers across the United States, but Nexstar and Sinclair stations were still not airing the show untill September 26th.

The 17-minute monologue received 26 million views across various social media platforms (including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok) by the afternoon of September 24.

The return came a week following criticism from conservatives and public pressure from Trump administration officials over Jimmy Kimmel's monologue commentary about President Donald Trump and his supporters' reaction to the assassination of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Story #2: KION-TV shuts down their news department

On September 23rd, rival KSBW reported that KION would immediately shut down its local news operations, with select newscasts simulcast from KPIX-TV, the CBS owned-and-operated station for the Bay Area, beginning that evening.

The Spanish-language newscast produced for Telemundon station KMUV-LD was also canceled with no replacement.

Lookout Santa Cruz reported that 16 staffers lost their jobs at both of these stations.

As a result of KION-TV simulcasting newscasts from the CBS O&O KPIX-TV San Francisco, this leaves KSBW the only local news station in California's Central Coast.

Story #3: The Bert Show is coming to an end

The long-running Bert Show hosted by Bert Weiss is coming to an end in October after 24 years on the air.

Bert Weiss said that he's retiring from the radio business on October 24th, marking the end of the only morning in the history of Atlanta radio station Q99.7 (WWWQ-FM).

It is unclear that a replacement for the long-running morning show based in Atlanta has yet to be announced by Westwood One.
